Our Coffees

Seven Summits
from $11.00

Country: Peru

Process: Washed

Certifications: Organic / Fair Trade / Rainforest Alliance

Roast Level: Medium

This coffee is roasted in remembrance of roaster David’s dad, Guy Berndt, who, in his own words, would have called this coffee, “the fantastic best”. Seven Summits is a mix of Guy’s favorite number 7, David’s love for the mountains, and their shared love of adventure. Together they made quite a team.

Shade-grown and younger than six years old (within its first few seasons of production), the Finca La Esperanza is sourced from a 2.5-acre family farm in San Martín’s Soritor village. The producer, Walter Gutierrez, purchased the once-abandoned Finca La Esperanza in 2007 and transformed it into a marvelous spot for Peruvian organic coffee to flourish. The Finca La Esperanza coffee is grown alongside corn and cocoa, proving the previous owner wrong and showing that anything is possible. Finca La Esperanza’s cup profile has only improved with the farmers’ ever-growing education and organic certification throughout the years.

Coffee is Peru’s most prominent agricultural commodity, and it is the world's ninth-largest producer of arabica. Peru is also a hotspot for organic coffee, with 220,000 organic coffee farms, and high elevations that offer just the right amount of shade in the Northern Andes. Since farmers traditionally use all-natural methods when growing their beans (natural fertilizer, chemical/pesticide avoidance, and recycling coffee pulp, mulch, and other substances), it was only fitting that they strive for organic coffee excellence. Because of their efforts, the area is known as a sanctuary for birds and other docile wildlife in the balanced ecosystem, and San Martin’s rainforest is abundant with fertile soil.

Cupping Notes: Chocolate & cherry, toasty, nutty, and sweet aroma. Notes of citrus, malt, pine, and semi-sweet chocolate with a mild, lingering aftertaste, low acidity, full-bodied, and well-balanced.

Roast Level: Light

The name "Nano Challa" refers to a local mythic tale about a challenge to become King of Jimma, and the coop adopted it to signify their desire to be a strong cooperative. Indeed, many co-ops in the West of Ethiopia have struggled to find good buyers who will pay enough for the coffee, to manage their own debts, and to overcome internal struggles and graft. Nano Challa was formed as part of an initiative to aid farmers in a more comprehensive way, starting cooperatives that could be governed by the farmers, rather than selling their coffee to privately run mills and 'middle men'. The program was originally administered by a non-government organization that coordinated agronomists and managers for each of the co-ops they work with, and also assigned business advisers to help the cooperative manage their debt, re-invest in quality improvements at the mill, and verify distribution of income to all members. They've continued this pursuit as part of an independent, local Union called Kata Muduaga, who assist the cooperatives with functions like marketing, exporting, and general representation on an international scale. Nano Challa is a smaller cooperative coffee mill near Gera town in the Jimma region, Western Ethiopia. (The area also has some of the finest honey available in Ethiopia). This is from a collection site 2km from the original Nano Challa station called "Genji Challa". The farms are at altitudes between 1900 to 2100 meters, planted in regional varieties of coffee.

Cupping Notes: honey, ginger snap cookie, dried peach, light floral hint, brown sugar, stone fruit, orange marmalade, peach, apricot, black tea, and lemongrass
